The machines are not the problem
The first visit is overwhelming because of how many machines there are, but you will only use a handful. The real gap is not knowing what to do, in what order, and how much. For the first month, fix five or six movements and repeat only those. Adding variety comes after those feel familiar.
Start with movements that use large muscles
Exercises using several joints at once give the most for the time spent. Isolating the arms can wait. Covering push, pull and legs reaches most of the body.
- Legs: squat or leg press
- Push: bench press or chest press
- Pull: lat pulldown or seated row
- Finish: one core exercise
How to pick the weight
The goal is not lifting heavy but completing the planned repetitions with your form intact. The last two or three should be hard while your position holds. Once form starts breaking down, you are adding injury risk rather than load. Most machines have instructions printed on the side.
Telling soreness from pain
Stiffness the next day is normal and usually settles within two days. A sharp ache inside a joint, pain on only one side, or an electric sensation when you move is different. Pushing through those costs weeks, so treat them as a signal to stop.
Basic gym etiquette
Return plates and dumbbells, and wipe down what you used. Sitting on a machine between sets looking at your phone is spending someone else's time. If it is your first visit, asking staff how a machine works is fine โ most will show you.
